On the second Sunday of October in the great Amazon port of Belem, the largest Catholic festival in Brazil takes place. Its called the Cirio do Nazare.

Celebrated for 300 years, the event is based on the discovery of a statuette of the Virgin Mary which, it is believed, has been bestowed with miraculous powers.
