“The Germans? I never hated anybody, but in war it’s a case of kill or be killed. It’s as simple as that. The people that cause wars never fight them, they sit in Parliaments and places like that. That’s why I have nothing but contempt for people like that. This VE Day celebration is a jamboree. The government’s in trouble so they’ve thought this one up. This is costing millions, but they didn’t put a few bob on the veterans pensions. What a load of hypocrites.

The ordinary German soldier suffered as much as we did. I hold no animosity towards them because of that, but what you’ve got to watch with German’s is that they’re either at your throat or at your feet.”
