Toxic Texas

“We’ve lived here 30 years, since 1972. The refinery didn't exist then. When we first came here, this was one of the most beautiful places in the city. The kids used to go out there and play in the maize-fields and catch bunny rabbits. Now the smell from the plant makes you nauseated, there's times that it gets so bad when you have to get up and leave home in the middle of the night.”

Mr. Alfred Williams, 56, walks past the local Valero refinery, close to his home.

Corpus Christi, Texas.
