Fat Nation

The National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA) describes itself as a ‘non-profit human rights organisation dedicated to improving the quality of life for fat people’. Their NAAFA Convention promises members a week of ‘self-empowerment, education, support’, and for some, the chance to have some fun. The ‘size acceptance’ movement is framed as a civil rights battle, a fight for the right to exist, in the words of NAAFA, ‘without guilt, without shame and without the humiliation meted out by a fat-fearing public, a thin-obsessed media, and a society that sees fit to condemn fat people’.
